ASIA, or Dream Factory
2015
Sculpture
I call this project Asia as I resort to this word to designate everything that is unexplainable, irrational – something from the sphere of recollections and dreams, not only because Asia is full of puzzling mysteries. I spent my childhood in Siberia, in North Asia. My memories of it are full of bright impressions, odors and sounds. I can’t say I was an inarticulate creature then, but the images which have become associated with Asia in my mind quite often could not find verbal expression. My post-graduate studies in Moscow and trips to various western countries taught me to use words, to articulate artistic gestures, etc. Yet, my dreams and memories, magic and feelings are still the same my own Asia.
Once, making plans for the day, I noticed that I am waiting for the evening from early morning to finish the main part of my work and then make sketches and small sculptures based on something I dreamt of at night. Sometimes I digress, feel tired or forget about it, and my dreams fade away, they are difficult to restore. I suddenly was aware that the very planning of my future projects is actually the most pleasant and captivating part of my work. My later activity resembles a factory where my dreams are processed.
Just as at any factory, the production of art should have raw material in proper quantities to function continuously; and the produce should be accounted for and stored according to a certain order, and then delivered to the eager consumer, or to galleries and curators. And, without the latter, all this production activity is also fascinating. Its content is to materialize the inexpressible. Sculpture fits best this process because it is ultimately materialistic and, respectively, an opposite to dreams.
