Birches

2015

Installation

Installation. 2012.
Media: Painted poplar wood, wood, metal.
Size: 470 × 400 cm.

This installation is titled Birches, although it is made of poplar wood. I took these “birch” logs and assembled a sort of Vietnamese bamboo curtains which were in vogue in Russia during the 1960s. Painted birches are not real, they look like some souvenir, and they don’t try to conceal it. Birches hang upside down, fluttering in the wind a little. Their evasive motion resembles ripples over reflections on the surface of water.

At the same time, the transformation of poplars into birches seems to refer the viewer to male actors performing as beautiful women in the Kabuki theater, or to my Museum of a Woman project.
