GLORY TO FEMINISM!
2015
Installation
The GLORY TO FEMINISM! composition was produced for the anniversary show of the Irida Association on March 8, 2014. My artwork was based on Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait with Saskia and Pivovarov’s Let’s Drink and Be Joyful! In this case, the male and the female parts change places, and the image is doubled in a mirror. The artwork is accompanied with an epigraph from a poem by M. Grobman – ironic and reassuring: “Sun rays, let us play, ahoy! Feminism is our joy!”
WE CAN!, a small sculpture, refers to an American feminist poster. Two round paintings are made with decorative cosmetics and other handy materials. They explore the same subject, but their characters are modern young girls. They don’t just display their muscles, they grasp dumbbells of bulbs as if taking up the torch of American feminists. Gender inequality is still there in Russia, so feminism is important in the country.
Both sculptures feature light. The lightbox (GLORY TO FEMINISM!), and dumbbells of bulbs (WE CAN!) are the metaphors of the energy and light of feminism flowing over all women – friends and sisters.
